Gaming Promiscuity

by     21 Comments    Posted under: Gaming, a la Ego

I recently got out of a really long relationship.

It was tough to say goodbye after being together – exclusively – for more than five years, but it had to be done. I just wasn’t growing as a person anymore, and I felt stifled by the demands and needs of my old partner. The spark was gone.

I’m talking about World of Warcraft, of course.

Since then, I’ve been on the rebound. No more exclusive dating for me, nuh uh. I’ve been swinging single, living large, like a kid in a candy store. I’ve sampled other MMO’s. My initial guilt faded quickly, though I found some of the other games to be pretty sleazy. The leopard-print leisure suits should have been a dead giveaway.

I’ve thrown caution to the wind. I’ve tried multiple platforms – oh yes, I’ve been gaming with more than just my standard PC. The controllers for my console system are awkward and I felt all thumbs at first, but the games were patient with me while I’ve learned.

I’m not ashamed. I’ve played Rock Band, and Viva Pinata, and City of Heroes, and Aion, and League of Legends, and Dragon Age…heck, I’ve even played the Paper Toss game on my iTouch.

I’m having fun. I’m exploring my options, finding out what kinds of games I enjoy.

I’m moving on. There is life after Warcraft.

  • I’d be interested in seeing which games are surviving the initial glow, and which are drowning in a pot of sleaze.

(Or maybe I’m just hoping for more Aion screenies >.>)

  • Welcome friend :-). I gave it up as well, it was very hard for me and I still have withdrawals :(

  • @Jov
Aion looks to have the only staying power of any of the other MMO’s I tried.

It’s taking a back seat to Dragon Age for the moment, but Dragon Age isn’t quite good enough to be replayed over and over again (I plan a very long or series of very long posts on Dragon Age very soon). Once I beat that one, I’m sure I’ll be back to Aion.

Rock Band is awesomesauce, especially if friends/family are over. Can’t be beat. Doesn’t really occupy the same mental space as the other games, though it still occupies THIS space-time continuum, as far as me spending time on it instead of other things!

    @Byrd
I will always love Warcraft, but I think not even Cataclysm will bring me back to it (not to be quoted later in case I change my mind, of course).

  • You have every right to play any game you’d like. But I will admit that I do miss Vonya from time to time. It’s been long enough that I no longer associate you with that game primarily. I heartily approve of non-wow-branded Tami Moorism.

  • @Krizzlybear
^_^ Well, thankya, sir. I miss parts of Ego, too, but I am happier here.

  • I haven’t played it, but Torchlight is supposed to be addictive. http://www.nuklearpower.com/2009/11/15/torchlight-a-lifehack/

    I just reloaded Morrowind. ;)

  • *laughs* Torchlight is on The List. The hubby enjoyed Morrowind too much to not play it. =]

  • but, but,… there’s PILGRIM WEEK ACHIEVEMENTS TO EARN!!!!!
(I still love me some achievements)

My gaming experience is super limited, though I too enjoy Rockband

  • *grins* Achievements are definitely fun! I haven’t logged into wow in…a very very long time, though. Probably not worth reviving the account just to get the achievements!
    .-= Tami´s last blog ..Gaming Promiscuity =-.

  • Then I shall get them all and tell you how much fun it is. Have I mentioned that I achievement-earned a violet protodrake that’s as fast as flight-pathing it?

  • @KristenSue
Wow, you got the violet protodrake? Grats!

  • In my world “MMO” means “Mom’s Morning Out” – enlighten me, what does it mean in your world?

I have never played any on-line games, I’m not much for video/computer games of any kind…except for – here’s a confession – the Nancy Drew series by HerInteractive…I know they are meant for tweens, but I love ‘em!

  • @Mama Nice
MMO – Massive Multiplayer Online. So it’d be those really big popular online games, like World of Warcraft. =]

And no blushes for Nancy Drew! Pshaw. I play and enjoy the Freddie Fish games. =]

  • I know this isn’t a gaming blog for you but I’m glad to see a post on what you’ve been playing . I was wondering if you were still playing Aion and enjoying it. My interest started to wane after level 20 or so. And I was never sure if I was going to enjoy the pvp part once I got to that level anyway. I still believe it is one of the most beautiful games out there and I really did love all the little touches. It might have been different if I had been playing with friends or had a guild. I’m definitely keeping my eye on it to see if they increase the leveling speed or add more quests.
I’m awaiting Cataclysm to see if I can get that old WoW feeling back. :)

  • Someone should re-release “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?”.

  • @Brad-o
Oh man, I loved those games.

And I still say you should get someone to make that zombie game of yours.

  • @Tami,

Zombie game…? Oh! With the zombie sheep?

  • @Brad-o
Oh, most definitely. Your quick overview of it cracked me up!

  • Been on kinda the same binge, but I’m finding myself feeling really empty and unsatisfied.

Wow gained my eternal scorn when they brought in the pet store. I resent games immensely that use RMT, but next to a subscription model… this was the ultimate betrayal. Wow is dead to me…

I fooled around with Aion for a while before being driven out by the sleazy horde of gold spammers and botters. The game itself was fun and had the slightly more hardcore quality I was looking for, but I just got sick of being unable to talk through constant smiley filled messages advertising ‘cheapest Aion Kinah! Sorry to bother! :) :) :)’ I think that last ‘sorry to bother’ bit enraged me more than anything else…

Torchlight… oh how I love Torchlight… Also, Trine is a brilliant game, check it out. In the times away from my PC I’m really enjoying my PSP. In fact I bought a second one… cause it was green… and pretty…

Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars (for PSP) rocks muchly. It’s just retro enough to be cool but the gameplay is slick and well developed. It’s my current obsession.

I still keep feeling like I want to go back to another MMO though. I seem to feel unfulfilled without one. Fallen Earth looks cool, but my PC is going to struggle with it.

Feeling a tad lost and adrift in my gaming life right now…

  • @Plastic Rat
I feel your pain. Rhotley’s been interested in getting back in Warcraft – nothing like that old, familiar drug.

Aion is SO CLOSE. I hate the goldspam you’re talking about, too – drives me batty, when I know that’s the cause of so much lag in the bigger cities. Beyond that, it markets itself as a PvP game – and I HATE HATE HATE PvP. I’d be playing the game with the intent of avoiding its major advertised draw.

And as irritated as I got with the Warcraft PvP changes and how they affected my PvE game, I can pretty much guarantee that if I got truly stuck in Aion, I’d end up frothing at the mouth and biting strangers on a weekly basis out of sheer frustration.

Torchlight and Trine, eh? I haven’t looked into either of those yet.

*laughs* Ah, we’re such techies at heart. <3 “green” and “pretty” are perfectly valid reasons to buy a second PSP!

Regular games just…aren’t the same. The social aspect is so very key. Once you’ve had it, playing games without it is…well, I can think of a rather crude analogy but we’ll go with butter.

Once you’ve cooked with butter, you just can’t switch to margarine and not notice a difference. I’m sorry, but I CAN believe that’s not butter.

    *sadface*

If you didn’t live like…all the way on the other side of the planet…we’d invite you over for rockband. =]

  • Games aren’t what they was before, Everquest, DAOC,… were great!
