P90X First Week

by     2 Comments    Posted under: Adventures in Real Life

The first week of P90X is now complete.

Whew!

We ended up taking two rest days – the first one was absolutely necessary and the second one was probably a mistake. Live and learn!

Initial thoughts are incredibly positive. I am absolutely getting the workout I paid for, unquestionably. I’m looking forward to the workouts most days, and I always feel…good…during them. There are a few that I am absolutely determined to defeat by the third week! *gleeful determination*

So, what was the first week?

  • Day 1 : Chest and Back (pushups, pullups, and some weightlifting) followed by Ab Ripper X (Pilates)
  • Day 2 : Plyometrics (squats and jumping, squats, some more squats, oh, a couple more squats)
  • Day 3 : Arms and Shoulders (Weightlifting, mostly) followed by Ab Ripper X
  • Day 4: Yoga X (This is not your soothing neighborhood yoga)
  • Day 5 : Legs and Back (Lunges + Pullups) followed by Ab Ripper X
  • Day 6: Kenpo (kickypunchy!)
  • Day 7 : X Stretch (relaxing, mostly)

My thoughts?

I hate pushups, but I am going to see a lot of improvement in that area. I’m looking forward to watching my numbers climb.

Plyo is now my mortal enemy. I hurt worse after that than any other workout. I’m hoping to get halfway through the workout this week, instead of just the 1/4 that I made it last week.

Ab Ripper X is fun, as long as you don’t already have ab pain.

Yoga X shocked me with how easily I got exhausted during it. This is NOT a gentle yoga – this is a serious, full body yoga. I only made it halfway through the workout, and my shoulders ached wickedly afterwards. I am SO going to own this workout and make it my own.

I didn’t make it through the entire Legs and Back workout either, but I blame that on a pinched nerve in my hip. Ow. Ow ow. Lunges are NOT easy with that.

Kenpo was SO much fun. My entire torso aches from all the twisting and punching I did. Love this workout, and I’m already eagerly awaiting the next time I get to do it.

Stretch was an hour’s worth of stretching, and I can honestly say I’ve never been that thoroughly stretched in my life. I may actually be taller.

The Diet

The diet has finally started to die down into a workable routine – we know what foods to buy from the grocery store, we’re back into making our lunches in bulk and parceling them out over the week, and the mental gymnastics over how many protein and veg and soforth that we need to eat have settled into old hat.

Plus, protein shakes are SO yummy. Having to drink one of those, have a chocolate protein bar, and drink that fanTAStic recovery drink on the days I really work hard is not what I’d call dieting.

Next week

Next week begins today with another round of Chest and Back. I may need a massage before we get started – I still ache from Kenpo – but I cannot be beaten!

BRING IT!

  • Ya know, if I were your age, I might give this a try myself. Instead, I’ll just stick to my diet-and-exercise plan for now. Results are encouraging so far, and I think part of it is, I decided to (re)start this on my own, because the realization finally hit me: I’m NOT getting any younger!

Hang in there, make it a way of life, and I guarantee your future self (visions of Dragonblight?) will thank you!

  • @Steve
Tony Horton, the main instructor in the videos, was 45 at the time of filming, is 50 now, and still looks incredible.

    I’m just sayin’. *winks*

My future self damn well BETTER thank me! This is cutting into valuable gaming time! =P
