Subscribing to Comments

by     9 Comments    Posted under: In Which I Blog About Blogging

I’m conducting an experiment – I installed a new Plugin on this blog which should allow you to choose whether or not you would like to be notified via email of comments. I’m pretty sure it’s on a post-by-post basis, but I haven’t managed to test it thoroughly yet.

If you get a chance to test it, let me know if you like it/love it/hate it. If it works well and people like it, I’ll probably add it to Choose and Blue Moon as well.

*fingers crossed*

Thanks!

  • Testing the comment followup!

  • I’m a big fan of the feature, as it creates more of a dialogue not only between the blogger and her readers, but also between the readers themselves. This beats my old system of checking the site compulsively. This seems less desperate, somehow.

    In the long run, you might get less page views from my IP address (since I tend to check things compulsively), but I’ll be back. I promise.

  • You’re talking about the checkbox below this comment box, right? :)

    You know, I don’t know if I have that on my blog, but I should. I do have an RSS feed for all comments to my blog…and it has a whopping 4 subscribers! (One of those, I believe, is me.)

  • Oh…and…maybe add a comment editor? So I don’t have to double-comment? :D

    I meant to ask, what plug-in are you using?

  • @Steve: Editors are for the weak. =P

  • @ Christopher: I never claimed to be otherwise! ;)

    @ Tami: It works!

  • There is actually a companion comments feed as well, that Tami tracked down a while back… just throw the comments path in front of the feed (a la http://tamimoore.com/choose/comments/feed/)…

  • @Christopher
    I totally agree. I love it on the blogs that I can activate it – I don’t have time to follow up on all my comments, especially since not all blog authors respond EVER, and I can never tell when someone will, if they’re on vacation, etc, etc.

    @Steve
    Comment RSS is definitely an option – as Gauntlet noted, all wordpress blogs have them, even if they aren’t explicitly offered. A little bit of link hacking and you get

    http://tamimoore.com/comments/feed/
    or
    http://tamimoore.com/choose/comments/feed/

    But not everyone wants to read every comment on every blog post and page. Sometimes people just want to know if the author responded to something they’ve said. =]

    @Christopher again
    Plugin is called “Subscribe to Comments” http://txfx.net/code/wordpress/subscribe-to-comments/

    @Gauntlet
    Yes! Thank you for remembering for me. <3

  • Oh, I know how to get the comments feed; I used to subscribe on Ego. :) But then I just ended up reading on the website anyway.

    I have a button on my site because it’s easy, fits, and there are 3 people who appreciate it. :p If I were building a site from scratch, I wouldn’t put it up there.
