Writing Update

by     2 Comments    Posted under: On The Art of Authoring

I’ve been slacking.

It’s true, it’s true. I keep looking at my plot printout – all the chapters all neat and tidy in a row, with a few tentative slashes of blue ink pen where I made some obvious notes.

But I really can’t pretend that I’m truly working on it anymore.

Today, I took a long look at myself and burst out laughing. “Writer? Really? When’s the last time you wrote?”

Before I could even retort, I interrupted myself, “And don’t give me that bunk about the Barska story. You and I both know that’s not the same thing as solo-writing. How close are you to reaching your goal of replotting Blue Moon by the fifteenth, eh?”

*uncomfortable silence*

“That’s what I thought. Stop being a wussy.”  I hate it when I get all smug. But, of course, I was right.

So today I stopped hiding from the things that have been bothering me about the current manuscript, and I wrote them down instead.

It was a step in the right direction, and talking them over with the hubby gave me a different viewpoint on the plot as a whole.

And…I feel better. Productive again. I feel more than a bit silly at how strongly I was avoiding this simple task – the keystone that lets me keep moving on the replotting. I will be done by the 15th. Even if I have to drag myself kicking and screaming over the finish line.

  • Hooo boy…can I relate! When I procrastinate (which is most of the time) the reason is for a perceived mountain in the middle of the road. I’m at almost the exact same place you are: I see the molehill, but in my mind’s eye, it grows daily. It’s about the size of Mons Olympus now. (Aside: Tallest mountain on Mars; much larger than Mt Everest.)

I know what I need to do; it’s simply a matter of making (not finding; lord knows there’s plenty!) the time to JUST DO IT!

On the other hand, things haven’t been quite normal here the last couple weeks, and probably won’t be till the end of the month. (Need to send an email on all that.)

Anyway…keep hanging in there…we have faith in you!

I love that. “perceived mountain in the middle of the road”. It’s perfect.

    *hugs* Thank you!
