July Arts
Oh, let’s see. What’s new (and scanned) since the last time I posted art? *dives into her art folder and starts digging*
My good friend Deb had a birthday recently, and we started a tradition of random sticky note doodles as birthday gifts. Here’s her Badkitteh, who is clearly unhappy at having to wear a pointy birthday hat.
Working on some gift art for Iris. Lyxes are SO much fun to draw. Also, finally found a style for butterflies that I’m pleased with!
Jodi Meadows held a contest on her blog for the word “butterfly”. I ended up entering a short story rather than this art, but I liked it enough to ink it anyway. =] (Also, I totally won! Sure, it was a random choice from a hat, but the Red Sox hat chose ME. And the five page critique that was rewarded was incredibly helpful. <3 )

Oh oh oh oh LYNXES *dies*
The little paws and ears and tail poofs and and and EEeeee :D
What is the blue pencil you’re drawing in? Is it erasable under the inks? Inquiring Courtneys want to know <3
@Courtney
Sadly, it is not very erasable, although it’s easy to make it disappear after scanning, since it’s so different from the pen. It smudges and fades with time fairly easily, though.
This is it (and I searched for AGES to find it)

I found it at a local art store and plopped it in a regular mechanical pencil.
I absolutely ADORE this lead. It’s the best sketching pencil ever. I’m able to achieve a lot of depth with it (which you will see, if I ever get around to scanning in the approved sundrop kitten in it’s sketchy glory)

I can tell you’re getting a lot of neat sketchy effects with it (seriously, LOVE those spots and splotches on the last lynx <3) which prompted me to ask XD
BUT IT'S MECHANICAL PENCIL LEAD? ARE YOU EVEN SERIOUS?
Because…that's literally all I sketch with. Must buy.
I've kind of learned that pencil sketching is far superior to computer sketching, so I've been doing a lot of it lately, and every little hint helps! Thank you! <3
@Courtney
I absolutely friggin ADORE this pencil lead, even though it’s not very erasable. I’ve gone through half my sketchbook with it, just doodling.
And when I found out it was regular old mechanical pencil lead, I flipped my lid. I was searching for AGES when someone told me they sketched with blue colored pencil. (Col-erase, no good. Really expensive thick 2mm blue drafting pencil lead? Blech. Super cheapo blue mechanical pencil lead? FAB-O)
I hope you like it as much as I do! <3

Yeah, the Col-Erase stuff didn’t really work for me, and sketching with Prismacolors is a BAD idea if you want to ink over them, since they’re so…waxy? I guess?
BUT YES. I’m so excited to buy some and give it a whirl! Sweeeet <3
@Courtney
Didn’t work for me, either. I made The Unhappy Face at them and just assumed I was doin’ it wrong.
Not so!
Hee! I want to know what you think of them. <3

I love love love the ferret so much. So much!
@Jodi
I’m getting closer to finding a ferret style I’m pleased with! I like the head and neck, but not the haunches.
We inch, ever closer, to one I like enough to ask you for photo refs so I can color it!

Awesome! Of course, you should feel free to use any of the photos in my Flickr for reference of any kind. :)
@Jodi
*glee* I might just do that. <3 Thanks!
