Pictures of The Desk Are Here!

by     19 Comments    Posted under: On The Art of Authoring

Anyone following me on twitter (@tami_moore) knows that I’ve been bouncing like a helium bunny over my new writing desk, hand-made to my specifications by Mr. Moore and Jarrod.

What did I ask for?

  • Simple
  • Small
  • Pretty (it’s gotta be PRETTY, I mean, c’mon!)
  • Inexpensive
  • Specific height, so that when I sit at it, my posture is correct for using Athena’s keyboard
  • Specific area underneath the desk, so that I can tuck my little ergonomic chair underneath it to conserve space
  • Somewhere to put my manuscripts, notecards, books, and calligraphy supplies

THE RESULT!

The pictures really don’t do it justice. The hodgepodge mismatch wood used for the desk surface fairly SHINES with eleventy billion different shades of gold.

I loves it, precious.

Names

I haven’t named it yet.

Possible names include:

  • Avalon
  • Oz
  • Neverland
  • OK Corral
  • Home
  • Area 51
  • Elm Street
  • Mordor
  • The Jungle Room

The hubby’s rooting for Mordor, so when I stub my toe on it, I can say “Ow! One does not simply WALK into Mordor!”

I’m leaning toward Avalon or Neverland, myself. When I head to the room to write, I can say “We’re OFF! To Neverland!” and get that song stuck in my head. Avalon’s awfully pretty, though.

Any suggestions or thoughts on the names? ^_^

Also, what do you think of the desk itself? I’m sure Mr. Moore would love some feedback on it. Shipping might be a bear, but he is considering making the desk one of the projects for the Super Sekrit Business Plan he’s working on.

  • Specifically picture 107 shows just how shiny the surface is, with the nice reflection of Athena. Still, you’re right in that it doesn’t do justice to just how much that causes the bits of wood to appear like gold metal flakes.

  • That has to be one of the most effective uses for a sheet of chipboard, yet simple and elegant. I personally don’t like using that particular material but I do like the result. One thing you may want to watch though is to make suer the desktop is supported as screws and nails have a habit of causing the wood to seperate into layers and falling apart.

  • @Shadowspawnd
They learned a lot about varnish, stain, and sealer from this project. The chipboard drank up varnish like it was cheap coffee!

The desk has multiple brackets and screws holding the top on, and I’ve been admonished not to sit on it. =]

  • @shadowspawnd

Yup! We put some metal angle brackets (clearly visible in a pic I left out) on the inside of the bottom portion to support the desktop.

The finishing is also a bit of a test on this wood, to see how it helps it hold together.

I will add that this particular purchase of this material seems much different than the chipboard I used in the past, as it held up very well to some rough handling, hand sanding and even machine sanding.

  • First of all: Wow! Beautiful desk! They managed to make chipboard attractive. no mean feat, that! :)

    Secondly, names:
The Love Shack (I’m goin’ to The Love Shack!)
The Mistress (Honey, leave me alone for a while. I’m spending time with my mistress.)
Adventureland (Time to see what’s new at Adventureland!)

  • @Michael C
Aaaaaaand now I have Love Shack stuck in my head. FIENDISH PLOT.

  • Hah, love the name Mistress!

Personally I like Neverland – mostly because a dear friend of mine who’s a multiple heart surgery survivor sings this absolutely gorgeous song about Neverland. Yes, it makes me tear up.

The desk is gorgeous nonetheless. I love it and am supremely jealous you have a custom-built desk. I need to slide that one in on hubby’s to-do list I think…

  • @Tristina
*grins* She definitely sings a siren’s song!

I think I’m leaning toward Neverland. I’ve got a copy of the Neverland Medly done by Kenny Loggins that I had forgotten how much I loved until you mentioned your friend singing. I need to dig up that cd.

LOVE this cd. Anyone curious. Full of gorgeous, gorgeous music. http://www.amazon.com/Return-Pooh-Corner-Kenny-Loggins/dp/B0000029FW

  • I will noow go picture by picture.
105: that is some lovely scrollywork. Did the gentlemen do that too? I love the bowl, owl and Texas A&M binder ;]

the next two: such humble beginings. the finished desk looks amazing

porch: 1) I think MY husband has the jacket Mr. Steven is wearing. 2) THAT LOOKS COLD 3) what a nice open space your balcony looks onto!

    construction: yup, that looks constructiony

varnished in the parking garage: that’s looking nice

full desk: wait, what kind of crazy ergonomic chair is that? I’m perplexed and need to know whats going on!

side shot: oh yes, that has a nice shine on it. nice and smooth and the kind of desk you just want to rub your hand across and sigh.

bookshelf: I’ve got one of those books! and hooray for your inspirationy board!

  • @KristenSue
And now you’ve got me wanting to go back and randomly comment on all your photos from the 365 project. I forget sometimes how much fun even tiny comments are!

    1) he applied the braidy/scrollworky bits, but did not create them. They were actually more expensive than the rest of the desk combined, but this was a learning desk, and the unfinished edges had varnished-over yellow paint that looked more like a warning sawhorse than a pretty desk. =]

Any other desks will have black paint or something to hide the yellow and make it classier without being as expensive.

    2) *laughs* That binder’s been with me for a long, long time! Right now, it’s holding all of my How To Revise Your Novel lessons and worksheets!

    3) The “nice open space” is sadly the major parking lot for the grocery store and strip mall area in town. It’s still a small town, and homey, but we sometimes really wish we had a backyard. =]

    4) Haha! Yup, that’s my chair! I’ve had that since College Station, too, I think. Good for my posture, so long as I use it right.

    5) Don’t tell anyone – I totally rub my hand across it and sigh every five minutes while I write.

    6) Hee, you do indeed have one of those books! I slipped my own books in there with my library books to remind myself of what I’m doing at the desk! ^_^

Love the inspiration board, too. Nothing like glancing up and having my favorite reminders to inspire me.

  • My friend’s Neverland song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arSI_JGBC_0&feature=player_embedded

It was filmed with the camera turned to the side so the video is skewy but Barry has one of the most gorgeous voices I know.
.-= Tristina´s last blog ..Wouldn’t It Be Cool If– Oh, Wait, There is One… =-.

  • Very nice looking. All the various woodtones makes it look like an OK Corral to me…
.-= Michael´s last blog ..Real Quick Cancer Update =-.

  • So pretty!! I like the twisty edges!

You should name her Valhalla. Nickname Val. Of course…Valhalla is where Vikings go after they die…Maybe you should stick with Avalon :P

Also, that is one wacky chair there, missie.

  • @Courtney
*laughs* I like Valhalla. Except for the death thing. Which totally takes Avalon off the market, too. I mean, Avalon’s more of a mystical, woodlyboodly type of death, whereas Valhalla’s all swords, bearskins, and beer, but they’re both deathish.

    Best. Chair. Ever. Srsly.

  • @Michael
I could have showdowns with my manuscripts. “This desk ain’t big enough for the both of us, adverb. You’d better just mosey on out of town.”

    @Tristina
    *saves link*

  • If I had to vote for those listed it would be Avalon, only because it sounds great with Athena. Now that I think about it you could call it “Olympus” or “Mt. Olympus” since Athena sits on it.

If you were going with songs I say you name it “Party”. Vengaboys song “We Like to Party” comes to mind. Then you could be all over the place as you go to sit by the “Party”! You could also tell people “that is where the Party is at!”
.-= Byrd´s last blog ..Today, the 29th of January (Sorta) =-.

  • Lovely, lovely desk! Can’t wait now to start my own desk project, but I’ll be using MDF, and perhaps galvanized pipe for legs…not sure on that yet.

Whoa…did NOT know you are an Aggie! (Note to self: Do not tell Aggie jokes!)

Names: I’m torn between Avalon (“26 miles across the sea/Santa Catalina is a-waitin’ for me…”) and Neverland. Check out Suzanne Ciani’s “Neverland” at Amazon.com, esp. if you like modern classical at all. (Some call it “New Age,” but hers isn’t, really.)

Can’t wait to read what you compose there!! (And what’s the large decal-like thing on Athena?)
.-= Steve Hall´s last blog ..A Pro and Con View of Language =-.

  • Back to the chair… where is it from? how do you use it? I’m very serious in my curiousity.

  • @Byrd
Mt. Olympus occurred to me, but I never stick to a theme in my naming. My desktop computer is named Alice, the blue external hard drive on the desk in these pictures is Montoya (Indigo Montoya, and yes, I know that’s now how it’s really spelled), and my iPod Touch is Bones.

The owl fits the Athena theme, but only tangentially. I have owl wings tattooed across my back, too. =]

“We like to party! We like. We like to party!” <3 Vengaboys.

    @Steve
What is MDF? And oooh, pipe? That sounds like you’d need special tools! *very curious*

Yup! I’m an Aggie. Though I’m also female, short, blonde, and Norwegian, so I am the butt of all jokes. Joke away. =]

I’m sort of ridiculously broad in my music tastes. I’ll check that out! Hopefully it’s one I can preview on Youtube. Gah, that reminds me of the one song I CAN find on YouTube but can’t find ANYWHERE ELSE in order to buy it. Blast you. Fantastic sort of Viking Metal, set to video game cut scenes.

Athena’s bling can be seen in more detail here > http://tamimoore.com/images/Photos/100_0512.JPG (sorry for the superbig picture)

    @KristenSue
I got the chair from one of the generic chain Office stores, I think about a year after I left the dorms. You sit on the taller part and your knees brace against the lower part, so you’re sort of jackknifed in the chair. As often as not, I find myself with my feet on the lower part instead of my knees, while I hem and haw at Athena’s screen and poke Montgomery until he’s more interesting. =]
